History and culture of English-speaking countries

Description: The aim of the lecture is to provide an overview of British and American
history, with particular attention paid to cultural developments. The course begins with
a review of the main themes of mediaeval English history and the period from 1485
to 1945, especially the development of public education, the growth of the British Empire
and the two world wars. By the end of the course, students should also possess a basic
understanding of major themes and events in American history from the colonial times
to the end of the twentieth century, with emphasis put on the Civil War and the Great
Depression. Enabling students to identify and explain the key causes and consequences
of the discussed events, the lecture will provide a context for the further study of British
and American society, culture and literature.

Practical English Course – Phonetics 2

Description: The aim of the subject is for students to learn more about English phonetics and how to apply their knowledge in practice. Students are presented with English sounds and told how they are produced, subsequently, the sounds are practiced in words and sentences and compared with other, similar sounds (minimal pairs). In addition to this, students hone their knowledge of word-stress and intonation patterns.

Description: The aim of the course is to familiarise the students with grammatical structures of the English language, and through a variety of exercises to establish and practise their use of these structures. The following syntactic aspects will be covered throughout the course: relative pronouns and clauses, the conditionals, the passive voice, indirect speech, the infinitive, the gerund, clauses of result with such/so… , would rather/ would prefer, wish, phrasal verbs.

Description: The aim of the subject is for students to develop their skills in the area of verbal communication. Students are asked to use English in a variety of different communication exercises. Students learn how to express their opinion and justify it. A lot of attention is also put to grammatical and lexical accuracy in verbal communication.

Practical English Course – Conversations 4

Description: This course is for students who have mastered vocabulary on B1 lever
and are ready to familiarize themselves with advanced vocabulary. Be ready to practice
advanced grammar structures in speaking. We will also focus on building structured s
peeches. The sessions will address a variety of topics and focus on fluency and
accuracy of students’ speech.

Practical English Course – Writing 2

Description: The aim of the course is to practise skills needed for writing academic papers. In winter semester, the emphasis is put on the rules of punctuation, constructing topic sentences and writing different types of paragraphs (description, enumeration, comparison and contrast, cause and effect). In summer semester, class-work includes analysing selected academic papers, formulating thesis statements, providing proper argumentation, and writing multi-paragraph texts (opinion essays, for and against essays, providing solutions to problems essays). Students will not only be able to produce texts in a register depending on the subject, but also to critically analyse them.

Practical English Course – Conversations 6

Description: The aim of the course is to develop students' oral skills with regard to accuracy and fluency. The emphasis is put on developing academic vocabulary and on activating it during group discussions. Class-work also includes specifying and defending one's opinion, giving oral presentations on a variety of current topics, as well as making use of advanced materials and accuracy-focused exercises. Students will not only be able to communicate correctly and appropriately in formal spoken English, but also to use stimulating resources.

Intercultural Workshop

ECTS Points: 3

Description: The course provides the students with theoretical perspectives on intercultural encounters, as well as prepares them for such experiences on a practical level. Students study the concepts of culture, multiplicity, multi-nationality, ethnicity and cross-cultural understanding, being exposed to a variety of perspectives and voices present in the modern global society. The workshop is conducted over the backdrop of the specificity of Polish culture, and as such, is also intended to help the students find themselves in the reality of their host country for the duration of their stay.

Polish Language

Description: The aim of the course is to provide the students with the basic grasp of the structures and vocabulary of the Polish language, thus enabling them to successfully communicate on a range of fundamental topics in everyday life. The course is also intended to place the language skills against the background of Polish culture, thus allowing the students to explore Polish cultural context and customs.
